How Much Forklift Capacity Do You Need?
Size for your heaviest load, not your average pallet
Choose forklift capacity according to the heaviest load you regularly handle, not the average pallet weight. If most of your pallets weigh 1,200 kg but your heaviest load reaches 1,800 kg, a 2-ton forklift is a reasonable starting point — though the final choice still depends on lift height and load center.
Capacity drops as lift height increases
A forklift rated for 2,000 kg at a low height may not be able to lift the same weight safely at maximum mast height. You don't need to work through the load-moment calculations yourself — just check four things on the spec sheet: rated capacity, load center, maximum lift height, and the residual capacity chart, plus any weight your attachments add.
Avoid buying excessive capacity
A larger model isn't automatically the safer choice. Oversizing typically means a higher purchase cost, a larger turning radius, more space required in your aisles, and higher energy consumption for work the machine was never going to need the extra capacity for.
How to Choose the Right Forklift Mast
Three numbers matter when comparing masts: lift height (the maximum height the forks can reach), lowered mast height (the truck's overall height with the mast collapsed), and free lift (how far the forks can rise before the outer mast itself starts to extend).
